Dutch MEP: The Green Deal is a big mistake, we need to increase production

The European Green Deal policy has increased Europe’s technological dependence on China and at the same time weakened the EU’s geopolitical position.

This was stated by Sander Smit, a member of the European Parliament from the Netherlands, in a comment to Guildhall.

“This week, Ursula von der Leyen finally admitted that the green crusade against nuclear power was a mistake. It took her fifteen years to do that. Germany’s rejection of nuclear power was a mistake. But I will say this: the European Green Deal is an even bigger mistake,” Smith said.

According to him, the current EU energy policy has not only increased internal imbalances, but also made Europe more vulnerable from the outside.

“By ending our own natural gas production in the North Sea, we have become more dependent on Chinese technologies and their competitors than ever. One-sided anti-fossil and green hatred has even significantly weakened Europe’s geopolitical position,” he said.

Smith believes that Brussels “needs realism: space for clean natural gas from the North Sea, biogas from fermentation and investments in small modular nuclear power plants.”

Earlier, in a comment to Guildhall, Jak Madison, a member of the European Parliament from Estonia, said that the Green Deal ideology is an illusion that holds European economies hostage and puts Western support for Ukraine at risk during the confrontation between the Russian Federation, since it is impossible to simultaneously reduce CO2 emissions and lower energy prices.
