UK Parliament calls for abandoning climate course and starting drilling

Europe should abandon its current net zero course, open access to drilling and fracking, and rely on its own oil and gas reserves in order to reduce dependence on hostile regimes and avoid increasing its vulnerability to China.

This was stated in a comment to Guildhall by Sammy Wilson, a member of the UK House of Commons from the Democratic Unionist Party.

In his view, Europe will remain dependent on fossil fuels for decades, and its current climate strategy therefore needs to be revised.

“The fact remains that Europe is still 70% dependent on fossil fuels for its energy, and that is not going to change for decades.”

“In that case, we should set aside our destructive and pointless net zero policy and move to granting licences for drilling and fracking in order to extract the vast reserves of oil and gas within Europe.”

Wilson believes that such an approach would both reduce dependence on unfriendly states and generate additional revenues for European budgets.

“This would make us less dependent on rogue states, bring in billions in tax revenue, and avoid the need for expensive renewable energy.”

The British lawmaker also linked the development of “green” infrastructure to Europe’s growing technological dependence on China.

“Renewable energy is increasingly making us vulnerable to Chinese control over our energy infrastructure.”

Earlier, in a comment to Guildhall, Bundestag member Tobias Winkler said that Europe needs to reduce its energy dependence on regimes that use resources as an instrument of pressure and build a more resilient supply system through diversification and cooperation with allies.
