Europe’s energy independence and security require both reliable supplies from allies in the short term and an increase in its own energy capacity in the long term. Under these conditions, Norway must maintain its role as a stable gas supplier as long as the current security situation requires it.
Mani Hussaini, a member of the Norwegian Parliament from the Workers’ Party, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Energy and Environment, said this in a comment to Guildhall.

— What steps can Europe take to achieve energy independence?
— The most important step that Europe can take on the path to energy independence is to expand its energy capacity. In this context, the development of renewable energy remains an important area. At the same time, in order for Europe to achieve greater energy independence, Norway must continue to play a key role as a supplier of natural gas.
For the Norwegian government, formed by the Workers’ Party, maintaining its status as a stable and reliable supplier of natural gas is one of the priorities. In the current security situation, reliable energy supplies from trusted partners are crucial for Europe’s resilience and strategic stability.
— What changes in energy priorities should the European Union and its member states make in the coming years to strengthen energy independence?
— The path to greater energy independence, sufficient generating capacity and more stable prices requires one fundamental condition: Europe needs more energy entering the system. That is why it is extremely important to promote new projects that increase overall supply and strengthen the stability of the energy system.
In this context, expanding energy production from renewable sources is one way to strengthen long-term energy sustainability. However, it is key for Europe to focus on ensuring sufficient available capacity and predictable energy supplies for households, industry and the economy as a whole.
— How do you assess the idea of increasing domestic oil and gas production in Western countries, especially in terms of its potential impact on defense capabilities?
— Energy policy and security policy are inseparable. It is important for the Norwegian government, formed by the Workers’ Party, to remain a stable oil and gas supplier for as long as the current security situation requires.
The issue of expanding oil and gas production depends primarily on the availability of resources available for extraction, and not just on political will. Under current conditions, reliable access to oil and gas remains an important part of the broader European security architecture and Europe’s ability to remain resilient during times of geopolitical tension.
