The European Union has built a strong sanctions framework against Russia, but its effectiveness ultimately depends on real enforcement. The main problem today is that too many identified violations lead neither to full criminal prosecution nor to meaningful punishment.
This was stated by Lithuanian Seimas member Martynas Gedvilas in a comment to Guildhall.

“The European Union has built a strong sanctions framework against Russia, but its credibility ultimately depends on sanctions enforcement.”
“Today, the main gap is obvious: too many identified violations do not lead to real criminal proceedings or meaningful punishment,” he stressed.
According to him, this weakens the deterrent effect of the sanctions regime and allows sanctions circumvention networks to adapt and continue operating.
“Sanctions only work if violations carry real consequences. Otherwise, they risk becoming symbolic rather than strategic tools,” the Lithuanian lawmaker said.
Earlier, in a comment to Guildhall, German Bundestag member Jürgen Hardt said that the EU should simplify the mechanism for imposing sanctions against Russia.
