CDR: Against the backdrop of the war in Iran, Russia has stepped up efforts to undermine Turkey’s membership in NATO

Against the backdrop of the war in Iran, Russian intelligence services have intensified a high-intensity campaign on the Turkish track aimed at undermining Turkey’s membership in NATO, exacerbating its contradictions with allies, and stimulating discussions about strategic alternatives to the Alliance.

This is stated in a review by the monitoring group of the Center for Defense Reforms obtained by Guildhall.

According to the Center for Defense Reforms, as part of this campaign Russia is working to heighten sensitivities around Turkey’s place in NATO, promoting conflict-driven narratives about a possible restructuring of the Alliance’s architecture with a weakened role for Ankara, and using publications that question the compatibility of Turkey’s interests with the policies of NATO, the United States, and their partners in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean. A separate part of the effort is aimed at deepening suspicion in Turkey’s relations with its allies, including through the exploitation of issues related to security in the Aegean Sea, the Eastern Mediterranean, and Ankara’s regional influence.

As the document notes, Russia’s efforts are also aimed at shaping in the Turkish audience a perception of NATO as a mechanism for externally constraining Turkey rather than a system of collective security. In parallel, materials are being used in which the weakening or collapse of the Alliance is presented as a factor that could open up new opportunities for Ankara, while discussions are being intensified about the desirability of alternative geopolitical configurations outside the Euro-Atlantic system, including closer coordination between Turkey and Russia, China, and Iran.

According to the analysts, Russia’s efforts on the Turkish track are aimed overall at loosening Turkey’s ties with NATO, undermining trust between Ankara and its allies, and creating the political and informational conditions for further weakening the Alliance’s southern flank.

Earlier, we reported that Turkey is building an alternative to Russian dominance in Central Asia.
