CDR: Russian intelligence services are actively working to exacerbate internal divisions within NATO

Against the backdrop of the crisis triggered by the war around Iran, Russian intelligence services are conducting a high-intensity campaign aimed at exacerbating internal divisions within NATO, undermining relations between the United States and its European allies, and weakening the Alliance’s political cohesion.

This is stated in a review by the monitoring group of the Center for Defense Reforms obtained by Guildhall.

According to the analysts, a key focus of Russia’s efforts is to undermine relations between the United States and NATO’s European allies. To this end, Russia is exploiting public disagreements within the Alliance, disputes surrounding the war with Iran, questions over the distribution of responsibilities and leadership within the bloc, as well as the allegedly unsuccessful talks between NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Donald Trump. Moscow uses such episodes to deepen mistrust among allies and intensify internal tensions within the Alliance.

According to the review, part of Russia’s efforts is also aimed at deepening divisions within NATO’s European segment, undermining the bloc’s internal coordination, and aggravating existing fault lines between its members. Separately, Russia is active on the Turkish track, seeking to heighten sensitivities around Turkey’s role in the Alliance and complicate its relations with other allies.

As the document emphasizes, Russia’s campaign as a whole is designed to portray disagreements within NATO not as temporary political disputes, but as signs of a systemic crisis within the Alliance.

Earlier, we reported that Iran had launched a hybrid war against Europe using Russian tactics.
