For real punishment for sanctions violations, the EU must ensure more consistent enforcement, under which serious violations lead to criminal cases.
This was stated in a major interview with the Guildhall news agency by Latvian Member of the European Parliament Mārtiņš Staķis.

According to him, “we need more consistent enforcement.” He stressed that “serious violations should lead to criminal cases.”
In his view, this requires “clearer rules, stronger investigators, and better coordination between Member States.” He also noted that “decision-making at EU level also needs to become faster and more effective.”
German Member of the European Parliament Lukas Sieper stated that the circumvention of sanctions against Russia should be treated not as a minor regulatory violation, but as a serious economic crime and a security threat. According to him, tackling such violations requires stronger coordination between national authorities, more resources for investigations, clearer legal standards, and faster judicial procedures.
