DIW Berlin analyst: Europe’s energy independence is the basis for economic and geopolitical stability

Sustainable economic and geopolitical stability is directly related to Europe’s energy independence.

Claudia Kemfert, Head of the Department of Energy, Transport and Environment at the German Institute for Economic Research, said this in an interview with GuildHall.

“Energy security is increasingly becoming a matter of economic and geopolitical stability,” she stressed.

According to her, it is necessary to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. “Europe can achieve real energy independence only by reducing demand for fossil fuels,” the expert noted.

She added that systemic changes in the energy sector play an important role in this process. “Electrification, energy efficiency and storage systems make energy supplies more stable and less vulnerable to geopolitical shocks,” she said.

Earlier, the head of the Norwegian Parliament’s Energy Committee said that defense capability directly depends on the level of energy independence, stressing the need to strengthen Europe’s own energy capabilities.
