Criminalizing sanctions circumvention must cover the full chain of those involved — Martynas Gedvilas

Every serious violation of the sanctions regime should lead not only to the exposure of the scheme, but also to real consequences — coordinated investigation, criminal prosecution, and asset confiscation.

This was stated in a comment to Guildhall by Lithuanian Seimas member Martynas Gedvilas.

“We must move from detection to consequence. Every serious sanctions violation must trigger a coordinated investigation, prosecution, and asset confiscation.”

“Enforcement must cover the full chain of responsibility — from financial institutions and intermediaries to logistics operators and third-country actors who knowingly or negligently facilitate sanctions circumvention,” the Lithuanian lawmaker stressed.

Gedvilas also said that the European Union needs to accelerate and strengthen the mechanisms for confiscating frozen assets.

“Frozen assets alone are not enough — they must be effectively and legally transformed into resources that support Ukraine’s recovery and resilience.”

“Stronger coordination at the European level is essential,” Gedvilas added.

Earlier, in a comment to Guildhall, Laurynas Šedvydis, a member of the Lithuanian Seimas and Chair of the Human Rights Committee, said that expanding the powers of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office in investigating sanctions violations could form part of the solution to weak enforcement in the EU.
