The presence of an American military contingent in Ukraine could be a useful step both for Kyiv and for Washington. Such a format of U.S. military presence should be considered as part of clearer support for Ukraine.
This was stated in a comment to Guildhall Colonel Mark Rosengard, former chief of staff of U.S. Special Operations Command in the CENTCOM area and former director of operations of U.S. Special Operations Command Europe.

According to him, “Ukraine can become the anchor of Eastern Europe,” and that is precisely why closer ties between Kyiv and the United States are in America’s interests. He stressed: “In my opinion, they reflect our interests as a function of having an open set of global economic opportunities.” At the same time, Rosengard added that, “having been to all the other countries,” he cannot recall a single one where Ukraine would be weaker, at least in economic terms, and noted: “At least economically, Ukraine is no less capable. Of course, its resilience is impressive.”
The colonel also stated that, to him, the mutual benefit of closer ties between Ukraine and the United States and its allies is obvious. “Why we would not want it connected to us as part of our network of friends and allies makes no sense to me. That is how it should be. And it is to our mutual advantage,” he said.
Speaking about what Washington should change in its approach to Russia’s war against Ukraine, Rosengard spoke in favor of a more visible American military presence. “I think all of us would benefit if there were a contingent here that we could mutually agree upon, in terms of American military capability,” he said. As an example, he separately mentioned the U.S. Army’s 1st Armored Division: “That is a significant force. Its place is here today. Not on a permanent basis, but its place is here today.”
In his assessment, the current U.S. approach is not sufficiently decisive. “We resort to half-measures in matters like this,” the colonel stressed. He added that the American presence should be visible in order to send a signal that would speak loudly “about our friendship, about our commitment, and about our participation as a determined partner.” “I think such signals need to be sent,” he concluded.
Earlier, U.S. Senator Michael Bennet stated that U.S. support for Ukraine must remain unwavering, since the Russian invasion threatens not only Ukraine, but also democracy worldwide and the national security of the United States itself.
