General Tovari: Lifting sanctions against Russia is madness; there’s no point even starting this conversation.

The idea of lifting sanctions against the Russian Federation is misguided and contradicts the European Union’s already established policy of abandoning Russian energy sources.

This was stated by General Pekka Tovery in an interview with Guildhall.

“This is the most foolish thing that could be done,” Tovey said, commenting on the idea of lifting sanctions against Russia.

According to him, Viktor Orbán and Robert Fico are the most active proponents of such approaches, but the European Union itself is already operating under a different logic.

“We already have legislation in the EU that clearly states that by the end of 2027, we will stop buying gas and oil from Russia,” he stressed.

Toveri noted that against this backdrop, the very discussion of lifting sanctions seems pointless, as it would run counter to the decisions already taken by the European Parliament.

“This is a silly conversation. There’s no point in even starting it,” the general said. “It is much more important to continue the efforts we are making in Europe to secure our energy needs so that we are not dependent on Russia, the United States, or anyone else,” Tovari concluded.

Earlier, in a comment to Guildhall, Sergey Danilov, deputy director of the Center for Middle East Studies, said that the West has the tools to prevent the Russian Federation from strengthening its position in the global energy market, despite possible turbulence and rising oil prices.
