Only the defeat of Russian imperialism on the battlefield and the integration of Ukraine and neighboring countries into the EU and NATO will ensure Europe’s long-term stability. Such an outcome will deprive the Kremlin of its revanchist agenda and create a stable security architecture capable of changing Russia itself through the example of success.
This was stated in a comment by Reinier van Lanschot, Member of the European Parliament from the Netherlands, to Guildhall.
«In the long run, the best way to create a stable and sustainable security architecture in Europe again is if Russia stops being imperialistic and colonialist. That can only happen if Russia is defeated on the battlefield and Ukraine and other countries that Russia sees as part of its influence sphere, become economically thriving, democratically stable and vibrant, Members of the EU and NATO with a strong rule of law and civil society. This is Putin’s biggest fear and threat, as it could influence Russia in the long run to become like those countries», MEP noted.
Earlier, in a comment to Guildhall, Swedish Member of the European Parliament Jonas Sjöstedt said that Russia’s victory in the war against Ukraine would legalize imperialism as a method of international politics and send a signal to China that it is possible to take over foreign territory by force without consequences. The politician believes that it is very important for the West to show that it does not abandon its partners, that international law matters, and that the right of force should not determine the future of small states.
