«Preparation for aggression»: in European Parliament condemn Russia’s demands for NATO to withdraw troops from Central Europe

The Russian Federation’s position regarding the reduction of NATO’s military presence on the eastern flank, as one of the conditions for a peace agreement on Ukraine, is currently being actively discussed within the EU. Such statements should be regarded as potential preparation for the next stage of Russian aggression — this time directed at NATO. Putin is critically dependent on continuing the war, and the EU must be prepared for this.

This was stated in a comment to Guildhall by Member of the European Parliament from the Czech Republic (Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance), Marketa Gregorova.

«The position of the Russian Federation regarding the reduction of NATO’s military presence on the eastern flank, as one of the elements of a peace agreement on Ukraine, is currently being actively discussed — especially among the Baltic states. Indeed, officials from these countries have already spoken out, stating that such declarations should be regarded as potential preparation for the next stage of Russian aggression — this time aimed at NATO. And this, of course, concerns not only the Baltics. Poland, the Czech Republic, and other Eastern European countries are also increasing their defence spending and strengthening their armed forces. All of this is interconnected», — said the MEP.

«It is important to understand: what is being said today by one of the Kremlin’s representatives is not just rhetoric. It reflects the strategic thinking of a regime for which war has become a tool to retain power. Today, the Russian economy is a wartime economy. It is cut off from global markets, and if the fighting stops, citizens will immediately feel the effects of economic collapse. Even an authoritarian regime cannot remain in power for long if the population begins to protest en masse. That is precisely why Putin is critically dependent on continuing the war — and we must be prepared for this», — the politician concluded.

It should be noted that earlier, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Ryabkov stated that the armed conflict in Ukraine would not end until NATO reduced its military presence in the countries of the Alliance’s eastern flank. According to the Russian diplomat, who oversees relations with the United States, the withdrawal of NATO forces from Eastern Europe could allegedly contribute to ending the hostilities. He emphasised that without resolving this fundamental and extremely sensitive issue for the Russian Federation, it would be impossible to achieve a settlement of the current crisis in the Euro-Atlantic region. He also expressed the view that NATO’s eastward expansion was one of the so-called root causes of the conflict, claiming that its origins lie not only within Ukraine itself but also in the policies of the North Atlantic Alliance.
