MEP Tomáš Zdechovský calls for increased pressure on Russia over ethnic cleansing in TOT

The actions of the Russian Federation in the occupied territories — including forced passportisation, deportations, destruction of cultural heritage, and the deliberate suppression of Ukrainian identity — must be immediately halted. The international community must step up pressure on Russia through sanctions, legal instruments, and international tribunals. In addition, international observers, including representatives of the UN and OSCE, must be granted full and unhindered access to the occupied areas for monitoring and documentation of violations.

This was stated in a comment to Guildhall by Tomáš Zdechovský, Member of the European Parliament and a member of the Special Committee on Foreign Interference, including Disinformation.

«The actions of the Russian Federation in the occupied territories, including forced passportization, deportations, cultural erasure, and targeting of Ukrainian identity, are deeply disturbing. These are not isolated incidents but part of a systemic policy of ethnic cleansing and forced assimilation, which—when analyzed through the lens of international law—can be classified as elements of genocide. Such practices must be halted immediately. The international community cannot turn a blind eye to such atrocities under the pretext of geopolitical pragmatism», — the politician said.

«The international community must apply stronger and more consistent pressure on Russia through sanctions, legal mechanisms, and international tribunals. Moreover, international observers, including the UN and OSCE, must be granted unrestricted access to occupied areas to monitor and document violations. Support must also be given to Ukrainian civil society and media working underground or in exile to document crimes and support the affected population», — the MEP concluded.

Earlier, Constance Le Grip, Member of the French National Assembly and Vice-Chair of the France-Ukraine Friendship Group, stated that Russia must be held accountable for the genocide of Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. In her view, the West must unequivocally condemn Russia’s policy of forced assimilation and mass displacement. Such actions may qualify as crimes against humanity, and under certain conditions — as genocide. Russia must bear responsibility for its actions. This requires support for the work of the International Criminal Court, the maintenance of targeted sanctions, and the strengthening of international efforts aimed at protecting Ukraine’s civilian population, cultural heritage, and national sovereignty.
