Taking into account the legal definition of ethnic cleansing and potentially — genocide, there is clear evidence today pointing to the systematic destruction by the Russian occupying authorities of Ukrainian cultural and historical symbols, as well as repressions against Ukrainians. This must have international legal consequences. Moreover, the international community must strengthen sanctions against the Russian Federation.
This was stated in a comment to Guildhall by Member of the European Parliament from the Czech Republic (Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance) Marketa Gregorova.
«I have read the report (referring to the report by the Centre for Defence Reforms on the need for international oversight to stop ethnic cleansing by the Russian Federation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine — ed.) and I think that this is important and good basis for like the UN Convention and the ICC, because if we really consider the definitions of ethnic cleansing and potentially the definition of genocide, which is of course committed with the intent to destroy some national or ethnical groups, then I think this report quite clearly showcases that there could be a basis for ethnic cleansing of Ukrainian cultural and historical symbols and people from the Russian Federation. And I think this should absolutely have legal and international implications. I already mentioned the ICC. I also mentioned the General UN Convention on the Crime of Genocide and I think that this should be brought to Hague as a case and of course for that there needs to be more evidence so we should absolutely support gathering it», — the politician stated.
«Currently, for example, measures are already being taken to protect children, particularly those separated from their families. Parliaments of several countries are adopting resolutions in support of organisations tracking the movement of such children — including those deported to Crimea or the territory of Russia. Work is underway to return them to Ukraine, to their parents or to third countries. These are concrete steps aimed at helping the most vulnerable — civilians and children. In addition, the international community is strengthening sanctions. But the most important thing is to ensure an independent investigation of what is happening and the collection of evidence. We are trying to do everything possible within the framework of the European Parliament. I can confirm: the overwhelming majority of MEPs are absolutely united in their solidarity with Ukraine», — the MEP concluded.
Earlier, Speaker of the Estonian Parliament Lauri Hussar called on the West to respond resolutely to the genocide of Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. According to him, the war crimes committed by the Russian Federation in the temporarily occupied territories require a firm response from the international community. Concrete steps must be taken. These include the immediate confiscation of frozen Russian assets and the subsequent transfer of these funds to support Ukraine’s legitimate self-defence, as well as the strengthening and expansion of sanctions against Russia.
