Speaker of the Estonian Parliament calls on the West to respond decisively to the genocide of Ukrainians in the TOT

The war crimes committed by the Russian Federation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine demand a resolute response from the international community. Concrete steps must be taken — including the immediate confiscation of frozen Russian assets, with subsequent transfer of those funds to support Ukraine’s legitimate self-defence, as well as the strengthening and expansion of sanctions against Russia.

This was stated in a comment to Guildhall by the Speaker of the Estonian Parliament, Lauri Hussar.

«The Russian actions in the occupied territories have been consistently mean and evil through history. The scale of genocide, crimes against humanity and ohter war crimes Russia is practicing on the occupied territories in Ukraine, starting from all-in  agression since 2022 is outstandingly cruel even by russian standards. And should be energetically countermeasured by international community», — the politician noted.

«International community is partially a hostage of its own system, as we all know. The United Nations unfortunately has Russia (former soviet union) as a permanent member of the Security Council, hence it can veto any attempt to pass a resolution on that level. So countries who wish to promote law and order in international relations need to seek new formats of cooperation to bring criminally acting states and their leaders to accountability. We do understand that this is not a quick and easy process, however there are some small steps, which can be taken. Pointedly, the coalition of like-minded states could come quickly to the decision that all frozen financial assets of Russia, should be immideately confiscated and delivered to the support of legitimate self-defence of the Republic of Ukraine. Sanctions must be improved and enforced more resolutely and they should be specifically and very clearly be related to the condition: «Stop genocide, mister Putin!». I also admit that the Estonian parliament has adopted a resolution, a law, on using Russian financial assets for Ukraine in May 2024. We expect the ohter EU Member States to follow the path», — the speaker concluded.

Earlier, Danish MP Klaus Jørgensen also called on the European Union to strengthen sanctions against the Russian Federation for human rights violations in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. In his view, the EU must pursue a far more consistent and tough policy towards the Putin regime for the illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories, as well as for human rights violations and war crimes against civilians. To this end, the EU should impose even stricter sanctions — including a total ban on issuing tourist visas to Russian citizens, large-scale economic restrictions, and a complete halt to the purchase of Russian fossil fuels.
