Danish MP Claus Jørgensen has called to strengthen sanctions against the Russian Federation for human rights violations in the TOT

The European Union must pursue a much more consistent and tough policy towards the Putin regime for the illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories, as well as for human rights violations and war crimes committed against civilians. To achieve this, the EU must impose even stricter sanctions, including a total ban on issuing tourist visas to Russian citizens, broad economic restrictions, and a complete halt to the import of Russian fossil fuels.

This was stated in a comment to Guildhall by Danish MP Claus Jørgensen.

«Russia’s war against Ukraine is a direct threat to our freedom, democracy, and security. SF condemns Russia’s occupation of Ukraine’s sovereign territories and opposes all forms of war crimes and illegal occupation. That is why SF believes the EU must pursue a far more consistent and forceful policy towards the Putin regime. We can – and must – make life significantly more difficult for the Kremlin through tough sanctions, including a full stop to Russian tourist visas, extensive economic restrictions, and the cessation of all purchases of Russian fossil fuels. SF also proposes that the EU abolish the veto in foreign policy, so that sanctions and security measures can no longer be blocked by individual member states. Furthermore, intelligence cooperation must be significantly strengthened to counter hybrid threats and disinformation, and to reduce reliance on American intelligence», — the MP noted.

«To ensure a stronger and more independent Europe, SF supports Ursula von der Leyen’s ReArm Europe plan and proposes a range of concrete initiatives in particular the need to EU member states must invest at least half of their defense budgets in European arms production, the EU should issue common loans for defense investments, temporarily exempted from the convergence criteria and financial transaction tax should be introduced, doubled on transatlantic transactions. Also frozen Russian assets and oligarch funds must be used to support Ukraine and its defense industry. SF advocates for a new joint European security policy that balances national considerations with the ambition for peace, cooperation, and greater resilience. This also includes a focus on cybersecurity and protection of critical infrastructure. In addition, SF fights for a green defense policy that prioritizes energy-efficient solutions in the use of military vehicles and vessels. At the same time, we are working for European independence in areas such as energy, healthcare, food, transport, digitalization, and defense – and to ensure that African countries are offered a real alternative to cooperation with authoritarian powers such as China and Russia», — the Danish politician concluded.

Earlier, Member of the European Parliament (Christian Democrats) and representative of Germany, Daniel Caspary, stated that the world must put an end to the crimes committed by the Russian Federation against Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. In his view, the actions of the Russian Federation in these territories — which include the forced assimilation of the Ukrainian population, the deliberate encroachment on cultural identity, and the violation of the right to self-determination — must be stopped immediately. The international community must act in a unified and resolute manner. Maintaining pressure on Russia — through targeted sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and a unified stance by the entire international community — remains a key step. It is also essential to ensure access for independent international observers — for example, under a UN mandate — to the temporarily occupied regions of Ukraine.
