Slovenian MEP: The EU must maintain pressure on Russia for human rights violations in the TOT

The EU has already taken significant steps in response to Russia’s failure to respect human rights in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine: targeted sanctions, diplomatic isolation of the Russian Federation, restrictions on financial flows and trade in sensitive goods, efforts to combat media disinformation, and exclusion from key international platforms. The European Union must double its support for Ukraine — not only military, but also democratic, institutional, and cultural — and must insist on holding Russia accountable. This includes strengthening coordination through the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice, and the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.

This was stated in a comment to Guildhall by Slovenian Member of the European Parliament Irena Joveva (Renew Europe).

«The European Union has taken significant steps already, through targeted sanctions, diplomatic isolation of the Russian Federation, and restrictions on financial flows, trade in sensitive goods, and media disinformation. Russia has been excluded from key international platforms, and its status as an aggressor state is clearly reflected in EU policy and in the overwhelming international condemnation at the UN. These are important and necessary actions, and they must continue with full resolve. We cannot normalize dialogue with a regime that persistently violates the international rules-based order», — the MEP stated.

«That said, more can and must be done. We need to strengthen our resilience where Russia is actively seeking to undermine our unity. The EU must double down with unwavering support to Ukraine, and follow up with policy for democratic support, media literacy, and political engagement in vulnerable regions, not only to counter Russian influence, but to affirm our own commitment to democratic values. We must urge the international community to hold Russia accountable by reinforcing coordination through the ICC, the ICJ, and the Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine, as stated in resolutions on European Parliament. Compliance with international human rights obligations is not optional, and we must keep applying pressure, through sanctions, accountability mechanisms, and continued support for Ukraine, not just militarily, but economically, institutionally, and culturally», — the parliamentarian summed up.

Earliar Udo Bullmann, a Member of the European Parliament from Germany, representing the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, called for an end to Russia’s human rights violations in the TOT. The actions of the Russian Federation in these territories constitute a blatant violation of international law and fundamental human rights. This is part of a deliberate policy of repression that demands unequivocal condemnation and immediate action from Western countries to put a stop to these practices.
