The European Parliament is calling for the Russia to be held accountable for human rights violations in the TOT

Commenting on the question of what measures the international community should take to ensure the Russian Federation complies with human rights obligations in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, Member of the European Parliament from Germany (Renew Europe Group) and member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Engin Eroglu, emphasized the importance of documenting human rights violations for their further use in international legal proceedings against war criminals. However, the most crucial step, he noted, is that the EU must significantly strengthen its military support for Ukraine, thereby ensuring Ukraine’s advantageous position in the negotiation process in order to achieve a sustainable and just peace.

The politician made this statement in a comment to Guildhall.

«Together with civil society organizations, the EU and its member states must record Russia’s human rights violations in the occupied territories so that they can be used in international proceedings against war criminals after the war ends», — noted the parliamentarian.

«While diplomatic efforts to quickly end Russia’s illegal practices, including efforts at the UN level, should not be ruled out, this does not offer a guarantee. Only a long-term and sustainable peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia could provide this. To achieve this, Ukraine must be placed in a better negotiating position. Military support to the country must therefore be further increased», — summarized the German MEP.

Earlier, French MEP Thomas Pellerin-Carlin, a member of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats group, also called for the development of a strategy to halt ethnic cleansing in the temporarily occupied territories. In his view, Russia’s war crimes in these territories represent an extremely complex problem, and the only real way to stop them is to stop Putin himself. To achieve this, the EU must develop long-term strategies aimed at limiting Russia’s ability to convert oil and gas revenues into financial resources, thereby weakening its potential not only in the current war but also in any future conflicts that the Putin regime might initiate.
